Ancient temples of Belur & Halebid
BELUR & HALEBID
A private day trip from Bangalore to the most intricately carved temples in India — and one of the world's great undiscovered treasures
Marvel at soapstone wonders
Belur and Halebid are not famous enough. That is the honest truth. The Hoysala temples of Karnataka are among the most extraordinary works of human hands anywhere on Earth — more intricately carved than Angkor Wat, older than most European cathedrals, and built from a soapstone so soft it could be worked like wood yet hardens over centuries into something close to metal. Most visitors to India never reach them. Those who do almost never forget them. Our private day trip from Bangalore to Belur and Halebid is designed to make sure you arrive with the context to understand what you are looking at — because without that context, even the greatest temple in the world is just a building.

What to expect
The Belur and Halebid day trip from Bangalore begins early, with your guide meeting you at your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle. The drive northwest takes roughly four hours, long enough for your guide to tell you the story of the Hoysala dynasty — the kingdom that emerged from the Western Ghats in the 10th century, expanded across most of South India, and chose to express its power not through conquest alone but through the most ambitious programme of temple construction the subcontinent had ever seen.
The first stop is Belur, the early capital of the Hoysala Empire, and home to the Chennakeshava Temple — a Vishnu temple commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE and so complex, so laden with sculpture, that it took 103 years to complete. Three generations of craftsmen worked on it. Your guide will take you slowly around the exterior friezes, which run in horizontal bands around the entire temple: elephants at the base representing stability, then horses representing speed, then scrolling vines, then scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, then the figures of gods and celestial dancers so finely carved that the bracelets on their wrists can be pushed up and down, the rings in their headdresses moved with a fingertip. These are not reliefs. They are sculptures that simply happen to be attached to a wall.
From Belur the tour moves sixteen kilometres to Halebid, the later capital, where the Hoysaleswara Temple is if anything even more extraordinary in scale — a twin temple dedicated to King Hoysaleswara and his queen, its outer walls covered in the same dense horizontal friezes but here running for over a hundred metres, an unbroken encyclopaedia of Hindu mythology carved in stone. Halebid means the Old City. It was sacked twice by the armies of the Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century and never fully recovered. Walking through it today, your guide will explain what was lost and what miraculously survived.
Lunch is at a restaurant your guide trusts near Hassan, a proper sit-down meal in the heart of Karnataka’s agricultural heartland, before the drive back to Bangalore in the late afternoon.

Chennakesava temple of Belur
The main hall has sculptures that are fantastic in terms if the intricacy of the carvings. The bracelets on the arms of one of the dancer statues can be moved up and down. The headdress of another dancer statue has a moveable ring! Another noteworthy characteristic of sculptures in Belur is that sculptures at Belur is that they are signed off by the respective sculptors like in a painting, often as a boastful epithet.
Halebid
After Lunch we head to Halebid, the other capital of the Hoyasala empire. Located 16 Kms from Belur, there are 2 major highlights of Halebid. We spend a couple of hours in the 2 magnificent temples inside the complex dedicated to Hoysalesvara and Shantalesvara. The other sculpture of interest is a giant statue of Nandi the holy Bull of Lord Shiva which took 86 years to build. Of interest would be to note the veins depicted gracefully on the face.

Frequenty Asked Questions
How far is Belur from Bangalore and how long does the drive take?
Belur is approximately 220 kilometres from Bangalore. The drive takes around three and a half hours via Hassan on good roads. We recommend departing by 7am to reach the temples when they open and make the most of the morning light.
Are the Belur and Halebid temples open every day?
Both the Chennakeshava Temple at Belur and the Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebid are open every day of the week including weekends and public holidays. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm. Neither temple is closed on any particular day.
Do I need to remove my shoes at the temples?
Yes. Shoes must be removed before entering both the Chennakeshava Temple at Belur and the Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebid. Shoe storage is available at the entrance to both temples. We recommend wearing slip-on footwear for comfort.
What is the best time of year to visit Belur and Halebid?
October to March is the ideal time to visit. The Karnataka summer from April to June is very hot and walking around the temple exteriors in midday heat is tiring. The monsoon from July to September makes the countryside beautiful but roads can be unpredictable. The morning light between October and February is particularly beautiful on the carved stone.
