Tamilnadu

Things to do - general

Tamil Nadu is in the south of India and is endowed with magnificent temples, beaches, wild life and mountains. Its people are blessed with a rich cultural heritage. Tamilnadu is worth visiting to experience classical music, art, literature and architecture. Tamilnadu is also home to Kollywood or the Tamil Film industry which releases the maximum number of films in India.

Some of the highly recommended trails in Taminadu would be as follows-

The East Coast Trail- ECR runs along the easter coast of Tamilnadu starting from Chennai. It is a fantastic route for motorcycle rides and experiential travel. This route has remarkable places like the Crocodile Bank, Rock cut caves of Mahabalipuram, pristine beaches of Pondicherry, mangroves of Pichavaram and the erstwhile Danish port Tanquebar.

Wildlife Trail- Taminadu has a few fantastic wildlife reserves which provide a great opportunity to experience nature. Mudumalai and Masinagudi are located near Ooty and are a haven for the Indian Elephant as well as numerous other animals like the Tiger, Gaur and Leopard.

Hilly Trails- Ooty, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, Coonoor, Topslip, Valparai and Yelagiri are all hill stations with  unique flora and fauna. The tea plantations of Ooty and Coonoor are fantastic and make for a great sensorial experience.

Culture and history info

Carnatic music which is the classical music form of southern India, is very popular in Tamilnadu. Chennai hosts the annual Madras Music Season during December–January, which includes performances by hundreds of artists.Several dance forms are popular in Tamilnadu. Bharatanatyam, the classical dance form traces its origins to Tamilnadu. Karakattam is a religious dance form where the dancer bears on his or her head a brass pot filled with uncooked rice, decorated with flowers and surrounded by a bamboo frame, and tumbles and leaps to the rhythm of a song without spilling a grain.Tamilnadu is also famous for its colorful festivals. The harvest festival, Pongal, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals throughout Tamil Nadu. On the first day people throw away old clothes and materials by setting them on fire to mark the end of the old and emergence of the new. During Pongal people also place their gratitude to cattle as they provide milk for the house and plough the fields.Tamil cuisine is based on rice and is eaten along with with sambhar, kulambu, rasam, curd and buttermilk. Popular snack items are dosai, adai, idly, vadai, pongal, aappam, paniyaram, puttu, uppuma, santhakai, idiyappam and uthappam.Culture and history image
