Thekkady is one of the best places to visit while in the Gods own country of Kerala. The name itself conjures up images of Elephants! Thekkady is most famous for the Periyar Wildlife reserve, India’s largest wildlife sanctity. Thekkady  is home to  wild elephants, sambar, tigers, gaur, lion-tailed macaques and langurs. An artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar river is a key attraction of Thekkady, as wild animals come there to drink water and offer great sightings.

Spice plantations is the other thing Thekkady is well known for. The town of Kumily is s major spice trading centre and is a good place to shop for spices like pepper and cardamom. Thekkady is also famous for its tea and coffee plantations.

Mangaladevi is an ancient temple near Thekkady, located on the top of a hill and is built in traditional Kerala style architecture. However special permission is required from the wild life warden at Thekkady to visit this place.

Periyar Wild life sanctuary is India's largest and is located in the middle of cardamom hills. Infact 2 rivers, Periyar and Pamba, originate inside the reserve. It is both a tiger and an elephant sanctuary. Some of the other inhabitants of the reserve happen to be gaur, sambar, wild pig, Indian giant squirrel, flying squirrel, jungle cat, sloth bear, nilgiri tahr, lion-tailed macaque, nilgiri langur, fruit bat, stripe-necked mongoose, and nilgiri marten.Sports and nature image

Culture and history info

The area around Thekkady was under the rule of the Pandyas of Madurai till the 12th century. These lands were the hunting grounds of the Travancore Kings during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1895 the Mullaiperiyar dam was constructed which created an artificial lake and that today is the biggest attraction in Thekkady. Herds of elephants come there to drink and play. Today, Periyar wildlife reserve is home to 40 tigers and hundreds of elephants among other animals. Culture and history image
