Chitradurga is an ancient town and was part of the Mauryan Empire under Ashoka the Great, in the 3rd century BC. Chitradurga Fort covers an area of 1500 acres and its walls cover a distance of 8 KMs. The fort was buit in stages between 14th and 18th centuries by different dynasties like the Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Hoysalas and Nayaks. It is a fascinating experience to explore this fort with its seven concentric fortification walls, 19 gateways, 38 posterior entrances, 35 secret pathways, four invisible passages, water tanks and 2000 watch towers! Chitradurga hill also finds a place in the great epic Mahabharata. The battle between Bhima and the demon Hidimba is supposed to have happened here. Legend says that the boulders you see today were part of the arsenal used during that duel several millennia ago!
