Belur & Halebid

Things to do - general

Belur and Halebid are masterpieces of Hoyasala style architecture and are located 220 Kms away from Bangalore. Belur temple is dedicated to Lord Chennakesava and took a 100 years to build. This temple built by King Vishnuvardhan features several episodes from the great epics Ramayana and Mahabarata in the form of sculptures. Halebid was the old capital of Hoysala Empire in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Capital shifted to Belur after it was ransacked by forces of Allaudin Khilji led by Malik Kafur. There are 2 magnificent temples inside the complex dedicated to  Hoysalesvara and Shantalesvara. A highlight at Halebid is a magnificent statue of Nandi which took 86 years to complete. The craftsmen have even shown the blood veins on the face of Nandi.

Culture and history info

An interesting custom among the sculptors of Hoysala period was that they engraved their names, titles and even the place of their origin at the foot of their work. Mallitamma was the greatest of all known Hoysala artists and crafted more than 40 pieces of sculptures. Dasoja and his son Chavana were the architects of Chennakesava Temple at Belur. The chief architect of Hoysaleswara temple was Kedaroja. The Hoysala style of architecture had a few distinct elements. The Mantapa is where people gather for prayers. There are seats made of stones for people to sit. Some Mantapas have a ceiling supported by pillars while others are open to the sky. The Vimana is where the shrine of the presiding deity is kept. There is usually a tower on top of the Vimana which takes the shape of a beautiful water pot right at the highest point. One will find temple eaves below the Vimana. These project half a metro from the temple walls. Decorative themes will be found below the eaves. Culture and history image
